Shri Bapusaheb Shende, started Honey center on a very small scale in 1947. People laughed at the idea of keeping bees in the boxes. Villagers were collecting honey by rude method of cutting honey combs and exciting honey by squeezing honey combs. This was a very unhygienic and cruel method of extracting honey. There was always a danger of germs and of poisonous honey. In the first year of the center, 10 colonies of bees produced 20 lbs (about 9 kg) honey.
‘Madhusagar’ has a co-operation of Khadi Gramodyog and has about one thousand members. On the basis of 33% subsidy honey boxes are distributed among members of the institutions.
In one honey comb or honey box there is one queen who lays eggs continuously in thousands. Some are soldiers or guards, some are honey collecting or working bees and some are drones.
In Madhusagar about 50 to 60 thousand kgs. Honey was collected every year. It is considerably reduced now. Three years back it was dropped down to 20 thousand, two years back to 15000 and last year 10,000 kgs. The same complaint was reported at Khadi Gramodyog. It was learnt that the reason was a disease known as Thai sac Brood. In the circumstances both the institutions collect honey from other states also. This honey is of a natural blend and equally medicinal. The most important aspect is that the apiaries give you laboratory tested pasteurized honey.
Mr. Patil in charge of Khadi Gramodyog center recommends to buy ‘Agmark’ stamped honey. Sample of every lot of ‘Agmark’ is definitely tested and hence safe.
According to Mr. Dikshit honey bees are of six types. 1) Agya 2) Black 3) Hardad 4) Atya 5) Poyae 6) Anjin
The breeding periods of these bees are not the same. Mr. Dikshit makes two categories of honey 1) red 2) white. Red is medicinal. White is table honey.
